President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday France would never take part in operations to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, pushing back on comments by Donald Trump that Paris was ‌willing to help.

“We are not party to the conflict and therefore France will never take part in operations to open or liberate the Strait of Hormuz in the current context,” Macron said at the start of a cabinet meeting to discuss the conflicts in the Middle East.

France has been pushing on with its own efforts to put together a coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz once the security situation stabilises and without a U.S. role, French officials have said.

Iran has historically been a friendly trade partner with France.

By contrast, its straight up open season on any country in North Africa. Macron practically lead the charge when it came time to carpet bomb Libya. And he was all on board in the overthrow of the Syrian government.

Given how unpopular Macron is, this is a bit surprising. I thought he might go for it to distract from his domestic problems.

It’s state policy to keep strategic independence. That is why they have independent nukes and why they were adamant about not going to Iraq, but they did sent troops to Afghanistan, because 911 was an actual attack on NATO soil.

yeah it wouldn’t work here, and why would he need to make distraction, he can’t run for the next election anyway so.

And I’m quite scared by what’s coming next, because currently I know what we have and his foreign policy isn’t the worse imho

It also says “never”, but yeah, it’s a pretty bland statement when you put the context back in (literally and figuratively).
