World News@lemmy.world•More than 350 stars condemn Gaza ‘genocide’ in open letter in time for Cannes openingEnglish
25·7 months agoIt’s not going to stop the genocide, obviously, but would you rather they just shut up and put up with it? Would you rather they supported Israel?
This is a show of solidarity.
The more there are, the more emboldened others are to do it too. The more people condemning genocide, the more likely politicians are to do something about it. Particularly if those people have public followings of their own.
Here’s a documentary on their purge of the left for anyone interested:

26·8 months agoOn the sixth day of Hate Week, after the processions, the speeches, the shouting, the singing, the banners, the posters, the films, the waxworks, the rolling of drums and squealing of trumpets, the tramp of marching feet, the grinding of the caterpillars of tanks, the roar of massed planes, the booming of guns—after six days of this, when the great orgasm was quivering to its climax and the general hatred of Eurasia had boiled up into such delirium that if the crowd could have got their hands on the 2,000 Eurasian war-criminals who were to be publicly hanged on the last day of the proceedings, they would unquestionably have torn them to pieces—at just this moment it had been announced that Oceania was not after all at war with Eurasia. Oceania was at war with Eastasia. Eurasia was an ally.
There was, of course, no admission that any change had taken place. Merely it became known, with extreme suddenness and everywhere at once, that Eastasia and not Eurasia was the enemy.
- 1984, George Orwell
In my eyes a mandatory read for anybody opposed to authoritarianism.

6·9 months agoGermany’s military industry was also trash at the time. Buying time for Britain’s defence also bought time for Germany’s offence.
If France, Britain, etc did something sooner rather than later a lot of bloodshed would have been avoided.
The World At War is an incredible documentary that covers it quite well.
“Since the French spurned any notion of taking the offensive, the Maginot Line ironically protected Germany better than it protected France.” Narrator, 8:10
“A few French divisions advanced 5 miles. But they didn’t even try to penetrate the Siegfried Line, at that time still unfinished. And while Poland fought on, there were no German tanks at all on the Western Front.” Narrator, 12:40
“If ze French Army would have attacked in beginning of September wiz zere very strong superiority in division in armoured cars well act all armoured cars in ze Western Front at zat time. In artillery, in air force, we ze German forces in the so called Western Front could stand no more than 1 or 2 weeks.” General Siegfried Westphal, Staff Officer Western Front, 14:05

Harris and The Democrats would’ve been able to continue with business as usual and nothing would change. At least now there’s some hope of a left surge in the wake of all this right wing hatred, pain, and suffering

22·9 months agoAs Tywin Lannister said “Any man who must say, “I am the King”, is no true king.”
Any man who goes around telling everyone they’re brave, probably isn’t brave. In fact it’s incredibly cringe.
A cringe country full of cringe people who say one thing but do another. Claim to stand for freedom, democracy, and liberty whilst oppressing all of those things both at home and abroad.
Land of the cowards.
That’s how English aristocrats (and aristocrat wannabes) say rugby. Whether that’s what they mean I dunno though
