3·3 months agoor GiveWell if you want causes ranked according to their impact as measured in QALYs. They research these things pretty carefully to determine the impact. If you’re not a utilitarian then you may not see the point of doing this (though on the other hand, if you’re not a utilitarian then why donate at all.)

News@lemmy.world•GOP senator who said trans people put girls at "risk" just helped a relative who raped a 13-year-old - LGBTQ Nation
1·3 months agoFor sure, it’s irrational bigotry. It’s still a misleading omission.

News@lemmy.world•GOP senator who said trans people put girls at "risk" just helped a relative who raped a 13-year-old - LGBTQ Nation
2·3 months agoThis headline has an important omission. It makes it seem like this particular GOP senator said that trans people are a moral or predatory risk to girls. But in fact, he was talking about physical contact risk as a way to deny trans people their right to play sports. It would be deliciously ironic if it had been the former.

News@lemmy.world•Spotify boycott: Artists leave ‘garbage hole’ platform after CEO invests in AI weapons
2·4 months agoInstead of paying for a static IP address, you can pay for a domain name and have a script on your home network update the domain name to point to your current IP address once a day. It’s a pretty common practice.

News@lemmy.world•Spotify boycott: Artists leave ‘garbage hole’ platform after CEO invests in AI weapons
2·4 months agoLeave it at your home network.
The simplest solution IMO is to access it via an SSH or SFTP connection. I have these connections bookmarked in my file browser, so I can open them up just like any folder on my hard drive.
Some people use jellyfin as a client which has a kind of netflix-like interface. I haven’t researched to find out if there’s anything with a more spotify-like interface.

3·4 months agothen do that. If you don’t have enough space, get an external hard drive. If you want convenience, you can attach the hard drive to a raspberry pi and access the music from anywhere. You’ll probably never get as convenient as spotify, but hey, you gotta decide what your values are and if that means being a streaming-vegan then that’s the sacrifice you gotta make.

14·4 months agoThe ethical alternative is listening to mp3s straight from your own hard-drive, just like we did in the '50s.

News@lemmy.world•Ryan Walters, the Oklahoma schools chief who mandated that all schools teach the Bible, was caught watching porn in his office
2·4 months agoPresumably because “I have no idea how this happened” sounds even more like guilt than “you’re lying.” You are looking at two pretty similar responses IMO and saying there’s a wold of difference between them.

World News@lemmy.world•Voting age to be lowered to 16 in UK by next general electionEnglish
1·4 months agoI’m still not convinced about this. I have known many teenagers who are more adept than me at making mature decisions (late 20s). So I think we all mature at different rates. I don’t especially believe that there’s a magic time in ones 20s where one becomes especially mature. And if there is, it is likely only a couple % higher in maturity points than at other times in one’s life.
Still, this magic 25 number appears a lot when people are trying to advocate for removing rights from young adults. Like for instance, saying trans people have to be at least 25 to transition. I’m always skeptical of it.

1·4 months agoI also believe in the science. That’s why I don’t believe in the developed-at-25 myth. If you look it up online you can see it’s been widely rebuked. Here’s an article from the BBC for instance.
Apologies for the rudeness.

1·4 months agoit’s not necessarily a bad thing for parents to have more voting power than non-parents through this means. Parents would generally be voting with their children’s best interests in mind.
you mean top-level comment, not OP.
If TLC can pull out some context which reframes the comment in any way, I will give them an upvote, regardless of my opinions on Kirk in general.
