  • I feel like people need to think more deeply about cancellation and when it is and is not appropriate. Personally, I think it’s basically never appropriate for random powerless individuals to be canceled, no matter what they did. There’s just other, better ways to handle harmful behavior.

Where cancellation is useful is for powerful, influential people who are actively and unapologetically harming people on an ongoing basis and can’t be stopped through other means. I’m not super familiar with Fuentes but it seems like he fits more in this latter category.

  • Oh gee willickers I’ll just press this depose the president button I’ve got here on my desk. Why didn’t I think of this sooner. Thank you so much!

Maybe I’m already doing that? You are speaking from a place of extreme ignorance about me and my political actions. But there is a limit to what one person can do in an authoritarian nation of 300+ million people.

Doing everything in your power to resist fascism still leads to the dilemma in question here. As this conversation demonstrates.

  • I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m saying—which, to be fair, I didn’t articulate in much detail.

I understand why it’s a problem under capitalism. But that’s sort of the whole point I’m making. We’ve created an economic system with all of these perverse incentives. We need to create an economic system where living can become more affordable for people without causing economic chaos, and where we aren’t held hostage to the economic interests of the extremely rich.

What if we had an economy that thrived when food and shelter become cheaper? What if the economic pain was inflicted on the well-off when the poorer in society started doing worse, instead of the other way around? If we could engineer such a system, our leaders would make much different decisions, I think.
