These are interesting times. Americans by and large have always insisted that they can overthrow a tyrannical government because their troops would “refuse” to uphold tyranny against their own people.
As we get closer to that situation becoming more than a hypothetical, more realistic arguments are beginning to receive prominance.

Parents have a particular attachment to the safety of their own children.

People occasionally ask questions in lectures. Anything they are confused about gets covered off in tutorials later. Lecturers and tutors both have office hours where further questions are asked.
If a student has learning difficulties or special requirements there is pastoral care available for that.

You sound naive. She studies dictators and she grew up in a neighbourhood of holocaust survivors. Teachers and their students are already being taken by ICE and it may become harder for targeted groups to find safety. This is not a question of “standing in a crowd”.
It’s telling that even his dream job (security contractor in DRC) is very corpse-adjacent.
Because he had a friend who he loved who started making questionable choices and is now wanted for murder. I would cry too.
It would have been good if the Obama administration had at least walked back the massive erosion of freedom, civil liberty, and the breaches of international law that happened under Bush.
