  • Aside of all that, they were also poisoning babies in Eastern Europe as recently as 16 years ago. Their Gerber brand of baby food had two tiers of meat products for babies as young as 6 m.o… The ones sold in Western Europe were 100% meat. Identical looking jars manufactured for Eastern Europe had only 50% meat. The rest was indigestible for babies “mechanically separated meat”, which is industry term for whatever’s left after thinly minced bones, feathers and claws are forced through a sieve. Babies don’t produce enzymes necessary to digest any of that. They eat very little, so nutritionally empty “food” isn’t something that can be easily compensated for, and it impacts their development. Oh, and before anyone brings up the economical differences between Eastern and Western Europe: the better quality foods made for western markets were on average sold slightly cheaper than their Eastern counterparts.

Explaining it all with pure greed is actually generous. Because it also fits a pattern of neocolonialism and a concerted effort to make Eastern Europeans slightly weaker, dumber and easier to exploit. Even greedy people would usually stop short of actually poisoning babies, right? It wasn’t a mistake or a manufacturing error. Labels were printed with the ingredients listed (however misleading, because “mechanically separated meat” contains little to no meat at all). It was a deliberate choice, made by well informed people. But also merely a blip on a long list of their crimes.

  • I lived semi-comfortably for over a year in a 29m² apartament with my spouse and our small child. I see no reason why 40m² couldn’t be a permanent solution for singles and child-free couples. Depending on structural durability (can they be stacked? Maybe if we add a steel frame?) we could build apartament complexes which would further extend the user pool. You don’t need a lot of space inside the house if you have a well stocked library and community workshop around the corner. Add some playgrounds and you can house young families. Heck, join two modules together and you got space enough for a 2+2 family for a lifetime.

The only real problems I see is we don’t know the energy efficiency of the unit and how the cost compares to traditional building methods. If it isn’t much cheaper the downsides (fixed size, lack of steady supply etc.) will kill it.

  • A lot of well meaning people try to bring attention to the disproportionate violence against lgbtq people by highlighting every case where an lgbtq person is a victim of a crime. I think this is the wrong approach because

    1. There’s already staggering numbers of people victimised for no other reason than being lgbtq
    2. Including cases where it’s arguably not a factor (I don’t know if this was such a case but it seems so at first glance) weakens the argument and opens it to attacks from people who would gladly pretend it isn’t happening.

But then again when you see this kind of news and your first instinct is to discuss the importance of the victim being transgender, you don’t come across as well meaning, so that’s probably why you’re being downvoted to hell

  • It has everything to do with it. I live in a country that made greenwashing a lifestyle: Finland. Every shop around here advertises how responsible they are with their business. Meanwhile, the quality is often worse than that of brands derided as “fast fashion”. Marimekko* made national headlines some time ago when they licensed a pattern to IKEA, and the IKEA product turned out to be much better quality for a fraction of the price.

It’s very important to target fast and ultrafast fashion, and I’m glad France starts with influencers. The next step should be quality norms. Otherwise, you’re just pricing poor people out, while consumer behaviours and environmental impact stay the same, and owners of established brands get exponentially richer.

    • If you don’t know Marimekko, suffice to say I saw Marimekko knockoffs in boutiques in France last week.
